UK Boarding School vs Hong Kong Day School: How to Make the Right Call

Every year, Hong Kong families face one of the biggest educational decisions they'll make: should our child board in the UK, or stay in Hong Kong?

Both paths produce excellent outcomes. Both have real drawbacks. The families who get it right are the ones who ask honest questions — not the ones who follow what their friends are doing.

The question most families skip

Before rankings, school visits, or open days — answer this: does your child have the emotional resilience to thrive in a boarding environment at 13 or 14?

Can they manage homesickness without daily parental support? Navigate peer conflict without a parent mediating? Maintain academic focus when no one is reminding them? These are not small things. For some students, boarding accelerates maturity. For others, it's genuinely destabilising.

The three things that actually drive the decision

Curriculum alignment. UK boarding schools running A-levels align more naturally with competitive UK university applications than IB does. If a top UK university is the goal, this matters. If the goal is the US, staying in Hong Kong and running IB often makes more sense.

The financial reality. Top UK boarding schools cost £45,000–£55,000 in fees alone. Add flights, activities, and living costs: £60,000–£70,000 per year. Over five years, that's a significant commitment. Have the honest conversation before you fall in love with a school.

Who is driving the decision. The parent makes the final call, but the child should be part of the conversation. The best decisions come when parents guide based on who their child actually is. Their temperament, independence, social needs, and academic style all matter.

The three questions worth sitting with

  • What does my child want to do at 18 — and which path is more likely to get them there?

  • Does my child have a preference? (This matters more than most parents expect.)

  • Can we genuinely support a child who is struggling, from a distance?

Boarding school selection is one of our specialisms at Klick Education. If you'd like a structured conversation about whether boarding is right for your family — and if so, which schools — book a consultation.
