New UCAS Personal Statement: 3 Mistakes

The new UCAS personal statement format has been in operation for the 2025/26 cycle and is now standard for 2026/27. Three questions, 4,000 characters in total, replacing the single open-ended essay that ran for thirty years.

Most Year 12 students in Hong Kong this summer will write the new format. Most will make the same three mistakes.

What the three questions actually are

Question 1: Why do you want to study this course or subject? Up to 350 words. This is the motivation question. The argument should be intellectual, not autobiographical. What about the discipline genuinely interests you, and what question do you want to spend three years on.

Question 2: How have your qualifications and studies helped you prepare for this course? Up to 350 words. This is evidence, not narrative. Specific texts, courses, projects, research, and super-curricular work, with what you took from each. Admissions tutors are looking for proof that you have engaged with the subject beyond the syllabus.

Question 3: What else have you done to prepare outside of education, and why are these experiences useful? Up to 350 words. Work experience, volunteering, leadership, life experience. The connection back to the course matters more than the activity itself.

Three mistakes we keep seeing

Mistake one: writing one essay, then chopping it. The three questions are distinct prompts. Treat them as one essay and the answers blur: motivation drifts into Q2, evidence repeats across Q2 and Q3, and the structure feels seamed. Draft each question separately. Cross-check at the end to make sure no point is duplicated.

Mistake two: under-using Question 2. This is the weakest section in most drafts we see. Students name a book and call it preparation. Naming isn't engagement. A strong Q2 takes one or two pieces of preparation and shows the thinking they sparked: what changed in your understanding, what you would now read next, what tension you noticed and want to resolve at university. Q2 is where the application earns or loses depth.

Mistake three: starting in September. The summer is when the reading, the thinking, and the first drafts happen. Students who start the statement on the first day back in school have eight weeks to do twelve weeks of work, while predicted grades are also being set in their other subjects. The result is rushed, generic, and visibly under-prepared. By results day in August 2027, the students who started in June will be glad they did.

What strong answers have in common

They are specific. They reference real materials, real moments, real questions. They are intellectually serious without being formal or performative. They are written in an eighteen-year-old's voice, not a parent's or a counsellor's. And the three answers together feel like the same person speaking, not three drafts stitched together.

The shift from one essay to three questions is, on balance, a good one for serious applicants. It rewards genuine subject engagement and makes it harder to hide behind general statements about "passion". The students who treat the format honestly write stronger applications than the old format ever produced.
